I have recently been attempting to expand coverage of the community activities that I both attned and publish articles about for our website. With that in mind I decided to accept the invitation of a friend and attend an art show in East Village last night. The show took place at Bar Basic on 10th avenue and “J” street. I have to say it was quite the enjoyably experience. The San Diego downtown art scene never ceases to amaze me as I continue to explore what it has to offer.
Last night’s show was called “Plumbago” and was a graphite art show where the artists were encouraged to produce pieces that utilized pencils as a medium. This resulted in a wider array of original creations than I could have imagined. Talented artists from all over San Diego participated in the event and produced a bevy of detailed, abstract, and poignant pictures. You never know how far someone can push the power of a pencil until you see a show like this in person.
The event was promoted by the Thumbprint Gallery which is based in the La Jolla area. This gallery has a a running relationship with Bar Basic and puts on artist events there on a regular basis. The next event (which I will for sure be attending ) is called “Significant Others” and just so happens to be scheduled for February 14th…Valentine’s Day! Bar Basic makes an excellent venue for shows like this. There’s open space to mingle and view the gallery, a full bar in the front and back restaurant areas, and a high-rise DJ/Live Performance stage to keep the good music going all night. We cannot wait to attend the next show. Cheers!
